TEF IRN – Integration, Residence, and Nationality

The TEF (Test d’Évaluation du Français) IRN is a test recognized by the French Ministry of the Interior. It is designed for foreign individuals over the age of 16 seeking to obtain a long-term residence card (A2 level) or French nationality (B1 level). This test assesses your language skills without addressing French history, culture, or society.

 

 Details of the TEF IRN:   

  • Oral comprehension : 17 questions (10 min)
  • Written comprehension : 13 questions (30 min)
  • Oral expression : 2 topics (10 min) 
  • Written expression : 2 topics (30 min) 

Duration : Plan for half a day.

TEF Canada or Québec (TEFAQ)

TEF Canada or Québec (TEFAQ)

For immigration and citizenship application procedures in Canada or Québec, the specific TEF test certifies your French language skills.   

 

Details of TEF Canada / Québec:   

  • Oral comprehension : 60 questions (40 min)
  • Written comprehension : 50 questions (60 min)
  • Oral expression : 2 topics (15 min)
  • Written expression : 2 topics (60 min)   

Duration: Plan for half a day (indicative: 2 PM to 6 PM).   

Note: For Canadian citizenship, only oral comprehension and oral expression are mandatory.   

Waiting period: 30 days between two tests.   

Price: 225 euros

Instructions for Exam Day

On the day of the exam, arrive 15 minutes before the start of the test with your exam notice and a valid ID. A photo will be taken for inclusion on your certificate to prevent identity fraud. Refusing the photo will mean you cannot receive your result certificate. For paper-based sessions, don’t forget to bring a black pen. 

Instructions for Exam Day

Processing time: 2 to 3 weeks after the test.   

Issued by: Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Paris Île-de-France.   

Validity: 2 years.   

Each certificate is personalized with your photo and signature, showing your scores, the level achieved, and a description of your general French language skills.   

Important for TEF IRN: This certificate is recognized by prefectures and cannot be refused. You can print your certificate directly. Make sure you have reached the required level (B1 for French nationality or A2 for a residence card).   

To determine the corresponding Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) for your score, consult the equivalency table.

FAQ

You must call us at 01 43 09 15 40 or come directly to our exam center at 3 bis Avenue de Gagny, 93220, with your ID and an email address.

The processing time for results is two to three weeks to receive the certificate. You will receive it by email. 

The registration deadline is about ten days, depending on available spots. 

You can pay by credit card, cash, or bank transfer.
